University Of Texas, Health Science Center At Houston

The University of Texas-Houston Stroke Center has a dedicated eight-bed stroke unit and a thirty-two bed neurologicial/neurosurgical ICU. The center places an emphasis on clinical research in acute stroke care and conducts extensive basic science research. The center is currently conducting eleven clinical trials of various treatments for stroke including drugs and devices. Among the trials are “Stem Cell Therapy for Ischemic Stroke,” “Argatroban In Acute Stroke: ARTTS,” and “MR-Rescue.” The center supports a total of four to five stroke fellows which usually represents two per year. Stroke fellows are trained for two years. The first year is an ACGME accredited stroke fellowship and the second year is a clinical stroke research year. As part of the center’s education initiatives, three conferences are held each week: Journal Club, Joint Stroke Neurology/Neurosurgery Conference and a Neurovascular conference.
